Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame

The 4th day of the Journey of the Olympic flame was special to many Hwa Chong Instituion Students for Hwa Chong Institution was the starting point of the youth Olympic flame torch relay. I will talk about my feelings on that day itself. At first, I was waiting with anticipation to see the torch. After witnessing the arrival of Guest-of- Honor Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, most of the students were waiting for the flame to arrive as we were told that the flame would enter by gate 3, where my class was located. However, moments before the supposed arrival of the flame, we were told that the route was changed and that we will not get to see the flame! For a moment, i was disheartened but i soon remembered that the torch will be passing by gate 3! Therefore, we walked out of the school and lined Bukit Timah road. After what seemed like an eternity, the Youth Olympic flame was right before our eyes! It was a worthwhile wait after all. I feel that the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame starting from Hwa Chong Institution was a very good decision from the organising committee. After all, Hwa Chong Institution have 9 students competing in the inaugural games.

Though many people regard the Youth Olympic Games as a much smaller event compared to the Olympic Games or the World Cup, I feel that their view is very wrong. Weren't those participants in the Olympic Games or the World Cup once youth? One fact that can't be denied is that the results of the Youth Olympic Games will definitely not hold a candle compared to the Olympic Games. However, many people fail to realise that it is not because that these youths are not good enough. It is because they are younger. Being younger means that they have gone through less training, less competition, have less experience, if this is the case, then we should have lower expectations. We cannot expect to see Usain Bolt or Micheal Phelps at the Youth Olympic Games. However, we may see young athletes who will grow up into these record breakers. So, I appeal to all those who feel that the Youth Olympic Games is a publicity event so that people will be able to see what Singapore is able to do, please think again.
